Regardless of the type of rhinoplasty performed, the post-operative period generally follows the same path. What may vary, however, is the time it takes for the swelling to subside. If there is a significant reduction in the size of the nose or a greater use of grafts, for example, the swelling may be somewhat more persistent.
The first 48 hours after rhinoplasty surgery.
The first few days after nose surgery are the least comfortable, especially the first 48 hours, although pain after rhinoplasty is minimal or sometimes even non-existent. In addition to temporary nasal obstruction, some nasal discharge is common.
To help with this discomfort, we recommend using a saline solution to clean the nose, as well as ice to relieve pain, prevent bleeding, and help reduce swelling in the nasal area.
General care after rhinoplasty
Initial care in rhinoplasty recovery includes, in addition to non-strenuous activity for a week, the use of a nasal splint (placed immediately after surgery, while still asleep), which serves to immobilize and protect the nose, also helping to reduce the formation of edema.
Nasal washes and the application of ointment/petroleum jelly are recommended for 4-6 weeks.
It is important to avoid physical exercise for 3 weeks, even low-impact exercise. It is necessary to avoid increasing blood pressure, so as not to increase edema and the risk of bleeding.
To prevent persistent blemishes from appearing on the face, sun exposure is discouraged in the first few weeks after surgery.
Wearing eyeglasses (both for vision correction and sunglasses) puts constant pressure on the nose, which can cause further deformation in tissues that are not yet fully healed. For this reason, wearing eyeglasses is only permitted after six weeks.
Nutrition in the postoperative period
Diet is, naturally, also extremely important in the rhinoplasty recovery process. In the first few days after surgery, it is advisable to consume... pureed or liquid meals, Cold or, at most, at room temperature. You should focus on nutritious and easy-to-eat foods.
After the first few days, you can gradually add solid foods. In addition, maintaining good hydration is also essential for your recovery.
Time to achieve results in rhinoplasty
At the end of the surgery, we can often get a good idea of what the nose will look like. However, since edema and scarring play important roles (and vary from nose to nose), the final result is only visible a year after rhinoplasty.
It's important to remember that aesthetic results vary from person to person, depending on the techniques used, the amount of swelling, and each individual's healing process. Functional improvement is expected within the first few weeks after surgery.
In general, the post-operative period after rhinoplasty is more peaceful than expected. If you follow your surgeon's instructions, you will get through this period without major concerns.
Rhinoplasty has an impact on self-esteem and self-confidence, bringing benefits to quality of life. With simple care during the postoperative period, the results can be incredible, transforming the shape of your nose, improving its function and making it more harmonious.
